Customize THIS!
It’s the era of YOU; at least that’s what corporate America would like you to believe.
No matter what the product, companies are giving us the chance to “customize” their products. After all, why shouldn’t inanimate objects be more like us?
This is especially true of computers, wireless devices and Websites. On the surface, being able to choose to use things or see the things the way we like is appealing. But if were to objectively sit back and view all of the things with alterable elements, we would see a pattern…we tend to return to the same things again and again – and that’s just boring.
From the background image on our monitors to the wallpaper on our phone screens, the colors of our icons to the hue of our favorite shirts – wouldn’t life be more interesting we let other people choose our settings? These customizations serve another purpose – they make the creator’s job easier than it should be.
I don’t want manufacturers to take away my freedom of choice, but I want to let them know that I am not so gullible to think their products are really about ME. It’s about making money, and that makes it about THEM.
Now excuse me. I’m about to build my own salad, slap my face on some M&Ms, order a pair of NikeiD and create the perfect Dell.
So many decisions to make. And all because somewhere along the line companies got lazy and we got stupid.
