What’s Up With Family Stickers on Cars?

If you are old enough, you’ll remember the ‘baby on board’ craze. These were small yellow diamonds that people hung in their vehicles to make a statement about their personal life.

Baby on Board spawned Dog on Board, Cat on Board, and even Bitch on Board.

I guess the thinking is that an aggressive driver, or a drunk one, will see the sign and be extra cautious when driving near the yellow-tagged vehicle.

There is a new trend that is similar, but even more annoying. Family decals. (like these) White outlines stickers that depict each member of a family.

Choose between adults, kids and pets – you can even add your family name.

I don’t care that your kid is an honor student; I don’t care what college he/she attended; I don’t care what political party you voted for or what sports team you root for. Why on earth would I care to know how many members are in your family?

It’s like a calling card for pedophiles, an invitation for dog nappers.

Can someone out there explain to me the purpose of a family decal? Is it so that you remember to account for everyone before pulling out of the supermarket parking lot? Or is it so that the spinsters of the world can wallow in envy?

If you have one of these family decals on your car, step up and explain why!

  1. I love your post, Andrew. As a creator of the Australian range, I can only say that ‘family pride’ has a lot to do with it over here. I think people love to show off who is in their family. I have to say however that we absolutely DO NOT put names on our decals, nor do we ever intend to and I agree with you that’s a security risk and an insane one. But we love the fact that people can show off their hobbies and interests (more so than their professions) and at least, over here, it’s harmless fun that at the very least, offers something for the car behind to look at during the red light :)

  2. Thanks for reading the blog and for sharing your take. You must be making quite a bit of $ cause these stickers are everywhere! Are Family stickers the new family crest?

  3. If family stickers are the new family crest, our “crest” changes about every four weeks as our kids decide that their last sticker choice no longer “represents” them anymore and we have to change it on the back of the car.

  4. I can’t stand those little stick figures you see everywhere, but a friend of mine just started making full custom stickers, and they’re sooooo cute. You actually send them a photo of your kid, and they make a cartoon sticker from that. I got one done, and I love it!! You can get your at http://www.AvatarsForCars.com
