Tune Out the TV Advertising Montage

TV commercials suck.

God bless the technological advancements that permit us to skip ads. Designed to raise brand awareness and sell us a product, I’m always amazed at how ineffective these paid spots are. Unless they are working on some deep psychological level, I’ve never seen an ad and than run out to purchase a product.

One trend that I’ve been waiting to end for over 10 years now is the repugnant ‘every-person’ montage. These are the ads that show a group of different people – usually from all walks of life – that repeat the same word.

PERSON 1 - “Product X is all about me”
PERSON 2 - “Me”
PERSON 3 - “Me”
PERSON 4 - “Me”
PERSON 2 - “Product X is all about me”

The second, and equally annoying variation is the repetition of words in a sentence.

“Product Y is totally amazing”
“Product Y”
“is totally”
“totally”
“totally”
“amazing”
“amazing”
“a”
“mazing”

It’s a tired trick, yet advertisers continue to dip into the well of copycat ideas. It must work! But who is falling for these ads. Is it YOU?

I could care less about the Mac vs. PC battle, but I will say, that when it comes to creative advertising, Windows should be ashamed. They’ve released Windows 7 using this tired montage format. So lame.

If you’re unsure what I’m talking about, pay attention next time you watch TV. When you see an ad following this format leave a comment below and tell us about it. And boycott the product!
