I’m Through Being A Stat Whore
Every blogger gets to experience being a so-called stat whore. You know, it’s that time when you have the compelling need to check your pageviews and uniques almost every minute. This is one sign of blog newbie-ness. You feel so excited when you get that additional couple of readers upon refreshing your stat counter after ten minutes.
But then again bloggers really don’t graduate from this scenario, don’t we? Pretty soon we get a bit more experienced and successful, and we try to monetize our blogs. So we then become a stat whore, but this time it’s that compelling need to check AdSense earnings every ten minutes or so. Some call it Google AdSense Stats Syndrome or GASS. I guess this is only reserved for those 90% of AdSense users who never really get to reach that $100 minimum per month. Seeing your earnings crawl up a couple of cents at a time sure is exciting!
But then you move on to greater things. Once you get decent readership and traffic, and consequently decent income from your blog, you would then have the compelling need to monitor your ranking on technorati and other ranking systems (like Alexa, perhaps?). You then get bragging rights for being more popular than this or that blogger.
Then there are those other miscellany, like how many thousands of posts one has on his blog, or how many comments, or how high the comment-to-post ratio is.
Move on. Grow up. Get a life. Stats are great, but they’re not the end-all and be-all of things.
I learned this the hard way, meaning my personal AdSense earnings don’t really get relevant boosts. Dammit! Why can’t Google keep ‘em $$$ coming?
