Wordpress, Akismet : Google or Yahoo?

Lorelle’s entry yesterday touched something I have been thinking of a lot lately. And the topic came up today in a discussion with a colleague as well.
Wordpress is a great platform, but a service which has become even more admirable is Akismet, the spam filter created by Automattic.
In an era of acquisitions, with MyBlogLog being the most recent one, I wonder what will happen to both Wordpress and Akismet.
Wordpress is almost Top 100 at Alexa. Akismet, a quite static web site is just outside of the Top 20.000, but surely has a huge server farm behind to keep the engine going.
I think the advantage of Akismet for Google or Yahoo is a sure thing.
But would Yahoo make a move for Wordpress?
Del.icio.us, Flickr, Yahoo Answers and now MyBlogLog. I really could see Wordpress fit in there. Google surely shouldn’t be forgotten here, but they already have Blogger.
Does anyone else think Wordpress is exactly what Yahoo! still needs : a decent blog platform (and one more great community)?
And everyone can use Akismet to improve our web and make the internet cleaner.
Most interesting question of course is : “How Much?”.
I say somewhere between $120mio and $140mio.

Isn’t it weird how not too long ago everyone was going public, but now the rage is getting bought up by the biggies.
Anyway, rather Google than Microsoft, I’d say.
Either way, the money would be well deserved

Franky. Get a clue. Wordpress is not hosted. What your saying is like trying to buy Linux. Its not for sale, ever.

Pud, thanks for the compliments.
Actually Automatic owns the name Wordpress and personally I don’t see any problems with one of the major players buying a company such as Automattic but maintaining the open source factor of Wordpress.org. But the .com domain would become proprietary.
Actually I consider this could be a major open source/proprietary platform move, Web Whatever worthy.
Besides that even when Wordpress/Automattic launched/outsourced the business platform Matt has aid the engagement in the open source spirit was defining. With GOOG buying platform such as JotSpot I don’t see any problem in any other major player buying platforms such as Wp.
Open Source? LMFAO.
Most open source [succesful] platforms whether have a company, whether an association behind… a company/association making the necessary arbitrary decisions.
What about SUSE Linux? Open Source? Yes surely, surely in the development [geek sic], but not in the commercial spirit.
Welcome to Open Source 2.0.
Get a clue.

[...] And in this case, I think the feedback that the WordPress team was able to gather, as well as the development testing, are probably be more valuable than a few dollars or cents per user had they opted to charge for WP as a subscription service. (Some software companies pay employees to do product testing!) . Hey, someday, if and when (which we think is more of an “when”) WordPress gets acquired by some biggie company they’ll get the bajillions of dollars that they deserve for creating such a cool blogging platform. How’s that for a hefty return? [...]

Hi! great and interesting topic on some websites like google, yahoo and Akismet. I have heard about google and yahoo more than aksimet. Thanks for you to giving me this useful information. According to me google is a best search engine which i have gone through. yahoo is the second best. Since Akismet is a spam detecting one. it will be useful for both the google and yahoo. thank you and have a nice day.
