Will We Soon See Free Google Hosting?
Google has been very active in the last year with acquisitions and new applications for its users. And no one knows what we can expect this year. Gdrive (or Project Platypus)?
No. Too narrow.
It will be even better, bigger and more sensational.
The almighty ever expanding monster Google will get into hosting. Free hosting.
And the first steps have already been made.
- Gmail. Currently 2800MB and who doesn’t have multiple accounts.
- Google Applications for your Domain. 2GB of free space for your mail account. No upper limit set for file storage (only maximum document size) in Google Docs & Spreadsheets.
- Google Code : projects begin with 100MB disk quota.
- Picasa : Currently only 250MB of web space.
- Blogger : 300MB images can be uploaded. Google has always offered hosting for own domains, recently even without FTP upload.
- Google Video and YouTube
Over the last 18 months Google has acquired several new applications and continued to develop some of its own such as Google Reader. You can now build your own search engine. And many more.
Little by little the geek has gotten used to live online, in the browser window. So what’s next?
A Plesk/CPanel alike homepage for every one. With mainly Google Applications.
All those services will now be brought together and interaction between all the applications will become easier.
Along the way, Google will offer you the possibility to host all your files… and your web sites.
The advantages of this will first be of legal nature for Google. The second advantage will be the opt-out option. While registering you will agree that Google indexes your data. But you’ll be able to opt out (less than 5% will do).
Especially the people too greedy to pay for some web space will forget this, they will only see free web space
I will go deeper into the advantages of this in a future post, but think Google Code Search and further optimization of the Google algorithm, especially ranking, and many more. Spam and BlackHat someone?
There will not be an offline Google operating system. Only a starter application for your Google Hosting Center. GDrive is not interesting enough for The Plex.
The burning question is of course : “Will Google Buy Wordpress?”
