Paid Upgrades from WordPress.com

Now I’ve seen it all. WordPress.com is offering paid upgrades. For what? Custom CSS? I can do that free with blogger. Okay, WordPress rocks and all that, but full site customization is one area it lacks, and I think this sucks. The beauty of WordPress (the install-your-own flavor) is supposed to be customizability and extensibility. But how can you demonstrate to newbies that WordPress (the WordPress.com flavor) is a great content management system for blogs and all that if you can’t even allow them to install plugins and custom CSS. Yeah, yeah, there are security issues and all that. But the least you could do is put in some “pre-approved” plugins for users to choose amongst.

Wait, does this mean custom CSS now allows users to insert AdSense ads?

I wonder how financially rewarding this whole charge-per-upgrade idea would be. Somehow WordPress.com just lost some “coolness” points.
