Bartender’s Guide to Blog Soda
After lunch I was sitting around doing nothing. When my inbox boings. I get this email. You will never guess who it’s from. It was from Mark Cuban. Can you believe it? We exchanged emails about 6 months ago about a professional gambling gig. I guess he has been reading my blog and getting a kick out of it. Woohoo. Another famous bastard reading my blog. It gets so old. Can’t they tell I don’t care. Famous people are slime. I glanced over the email and almost fell out of my chair. There was this hilarious MP3 file of Jason Calacanis explaining at a recent conference how Weblogs,lnc needed to be more like a soda.
He said basically that there were going to be 3 big names in the Blog Networks : Coke, Pepsi, and RC Cola and he was going to do everything in his power to not be RC Cola.
Cuban said about at this point that he realized it was time to to get his investment and get out of there.
I’m mean if you are going to be a Blog Soda. What kind do you really want to be? What follows is my growing and well amateur take on this Blog Soda incident.
What’s in your fridge?

Gawker = Coke
Yep we just entered in a lucrative deal with Bacardi, I mean Yahoo.
Try Bacardi and Diet Coke. Ms. Cox drink of choice.
9Rules = Pepsi
It’s all about Quality and Quantity. You don’t even need to get drunk to read this !
Fine Fools = Jones Soda
Where else can you find Turkey and Mashed Potato Soda?
Weblogs Inc = Tonic Water
It’s boring. But it sells because everybody needs a Vodka Tonic.
B5Media = RC Cola
The more the better. It’s ghetto Coke.
Creative Weblogging = Club Soda
It’s cheap. The recipe’s stolen. But we are Germans. So it’s ok.
Got any suggestions? Listen to the Clip

Haha, fucking awesome. Worst picture ever. Thanks Dick…no people his name really is Dick. Seriously. But I also was kind of calling him a dick for picking that picture, but since his name is Dick it might get lost in some strange connotation in which will lead me to continue rambling in the comments of the site.
Damn, I need another Jones Soda.

Right on. Jones Soda rocks. When I can find it. But actually, I think of you guys like Canada Dry Ginger Ale: extremely refreshing, effervescent, and slightly biting. Okay. Very biting ;D

Anyway, Weblogs, Inc. already sucks. Not the actual bloggers per se, but the network. Feudal Lords never die; they just seek a new medium. As soon as Calacanis sold to AOL, I stopped reading. The question is, why is mediocrity so f**king popular in North America? In our music, our books, our TV shows, film, and blogs. It’s because that’s what we’re spoon-fed, and don’t always know any better.

Exactly, my readership level with that network went down 100% since they sold out. I am tired of the Calacanis Feudal Lord Syndrome. It’s BS. I think he is the most hated guy in New York, next to Nick Denton who is also cheap. And a feudal lord. Did I mention there content sucks too?

Ok, pardon the coming vulgarities, but Weblogs, Inc. is shitty, plain and simple. Arial fonts all over the place, similar (bad) formatting across all their blogs, and largely crappy content make this a place I steer clear of. By comparison, 9rules member sites are more dynamic, WAY better styled, and I think the writers are JUST BETTER. There’s more passion among 9rules community members, and that shows in the quality of the blogs.
I think our “on-demand” culture will come around, and the best content will invariably win out. Here’s hoping I’m somehow associated with that when it all does go down.
