10 Key Ingredients for a Good Blog Cookout
Here’s a pep talk to all those traffic loving, ego feeding, people driven to build their blogs. This shit works trust me.
1. Having Content is good. But having controversy is even better.
First thing is first. You need to load up on all kinds of juicy content even if the readers aren’t going to be thumbing around your archives on day one. People like to think your established even if your not. We pre-dated a lot of our post because we had been working on em for awhile. Then we cooked up a boat load of controversy over the “Joi Ito Incident”. It drew a whole boat load of hungry bloggers out to see what smelled so damn good.
2. Authority is good. But having animosity is even better.
Everyone likes to know your an expert. But let’s say your not. Atleast have an above average brain and be able to act like you know what your talking about. Then load up on a good helping of animosity and start making phun of all the experts. It’s a change of pace for all those people who are burned out on all the serious stuff. People are tired of hearing about seriouos blogging hacks. So they came to us for some not so serious, not so wise drivel.
3. Desire is great. But having a desire to see someone else fail is even better.
I used to have a huge desire to succeed at this blogging thing. Now things have really changed. I just have a really big desire to see all the big blog networks fall on their face and then watch 9rules and a few Fine Fools take over in their stead. Besides who wants to read that boring pile of whooey that WIN is punching out as quality content?
4. Being positive is good. But being negative is even better..
There is a lot of opinion that being positive is what makes you succeed. It doesn’t. Stop believing the lies. Being Negative is what gets you ahead in this world. Look at Bill Gates he was a mean guy. He overthrew Apple and the rest of the computer world back in the 80’s and 90’s and hasn’t looked back. He never once had a positive ounce of goodness in him. Yet, today he is the top dog in the world. Not just the internet. That’s what JackofAllBlogs is about. Being top dog in blogging and in the real world.
6. Being passionate is great. But not being lukewarm is even better.
Don’t be lukewarm. Either be hot or be cold. Don’t be both. People don’t want to read a bunch of lukewarm posts. Take an opinion and stick to it. If you hate something be true to yourself and hate it with all your heart. If you love something love it with all your heart. It’s the only way to be true and be successful.
7. Being diverse is great. But not having ADD is even better.
If your blog is about blogging. Stick to it. Don’t blog about football, or about politics. Stay focused, it’s the only way to keep your readers coming back day in and day out. Especially if you intend to get them to grab your feeds.
9. Being unique is great. Being consistent is even better.
Once you get the ball rolling. Give it a shove and get out of the way. Once your readers start coming back day in and day out. Keep giving them what they want. Don’t fuck around, and be a goof ball. Don’t try to sell them something new. Give them what they came to get. Quit trying to be like Google who cooks up some new controversy every few weeks and expects me to love them. I want search damn it. Give me fucking search. I don’t want Analytics. I don’t want new features. I want fucking search. Be like Google in today’s world and your blog will fail.10. Being smart is great. Being one step ahead of smart people is even better.
Success is close. But you can still fail. If you don’t stay ahead of the game. Being smart isn’t all its cooked up to be. Even idiots can be succesful. Do you know how they do it? They do it by being able to stay ahead of people who are smarter than they are. My dad used to tell me the early bird gets the worm. And that’s the fucking truth. It doesn’t matter if someone is more talented than you, or smarter. If you show up more prepared, or one step ahead of the game. You are going to win. Trust me.

note to self: be mean. Hmmm… should start hanging out here more.

ah, the delicious joys of schadenfreude. Your list rules but you missed one point. Snark beats smartypants.

Man this is good stuff. Sure beats the hell out of many other Top 10 lists doing the rounds about how to go about blogging.
You’re hiding this behind the “drivel” tag, but really, it’s good stuff for those that don’t want to be just another cookie-cutter blogger.
